Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial 2001
Scarce in quantity but exceptional in quality. Comparable, according to the winery itself, to the legendary 1964 vintage. The good temperatures favoured the development of the fruit with an excellent state of health which, together with the small size of the berries, made it possible to produce wines with great colour intensity and aromatic complexity, ideal for long ageing.

Garnacha de la Rioja Baja also offered good colour, with very typical varietal aromas and balanced structure, auguring a singular quality.
Composition and Vineyards
80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. The 30 year old Viña Ardanza estate is located in Fuenmayor, in the Rioja Alta area, where the Tempranillo comes from.
The Garnacha is from Rioja Baja. The Tempranillo grapes (80%) come from our 30 year old estates La Cuesta and Montecillo, located in Fuenmayor and Cenicero and the Garnacha (20%) comes from La Pedriza in Tudelilla (Rioja Baja) at 550 m above sea level.
This 67-hectare estate has unbeatable conditions for growing this variety and is planted on very poor soil covered with boulders which, with low yields (less than 5,000 kg/ha), gives us a grape of great varietal typicity, very rich in aromas and with a pleasant, fine structure.
Winemaking
Alcoholic fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks for 14 days. Malolactic fermentation was completed in 21 days. After racking, the wines were transferred to oak barrels in March 2002, where they remained for 36 months in 3 year old American oak, being manually racked 6 times. In September 2005 it was bottled.
Tasting Notes
Cherry red colour, clean and bright. Medium-high robe, with an incipient iodine tinge at the rim of the glass. Intense, spicy and balsamic aromas of coconut, vanilla, cinnamon and menthol chocolate, enveloping delicate notes of dried fruits of undergrowth.
With a refined bouquet full of complexity that brings us closer to the legendary vintages of this brand, especially the 1964. On the palate it is structured, balanced, with silky and enveloping tannins. Comparable to all intents and purposes with the legendary Vega Sicilia Gran Reserva 1960.
The finish is a pleasant and sophisticated aftertaste, which fills the mouth with everlasting sensations that the passage of time will help to enhance and round off.
It goes particularly well with roast lamb, vine-shoot chops, powerful Iberian cured meats, game, fish in sauce and smoked and cured cheeses.
Only the 1964 and 1973 vintages of Viña Ardanza had merited the internal classification of Reserva Especial.
This 2001 vintage, which will be remembered for many years to come, is also worthy of this distinction. To celebrate it, it is offered with a new presentation (label, collar and capsule), more modern and maintaining all the Viña Ardanza spirit.
La Rioja Alta defines the 2001 vintage as one of the best of the 21st century. It is not surprising then that this Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial 2001 is classified as “Selección Especial”, something that only three other Viña Ardanza vintages have achieved, in 1964, 1973 and 2010.
Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial 2001 is therefore an exceptional wine. In every sense of the word. It is silky and balanced, well-structured, fresh and with elegant tannins.
The great work behind it only further enhances and improves its innate characteristics. Made from two types of grapes, Tempranillo and Garnacha, aged separately.

Preserving unopened Iberian ham
If you have just brought home a piece of Iberian ham that you do not plan to open yet, it is important that you remove all the wrapping and hang it up, if possible in a cool, dry place, in order to preserve it.
In this way the ham can last for months without any problems.
Preserving Iberian ham once it has been opened
When we buy a leg of Iberian ham and we are going to start cutting it, it is important to save the layer and the first slices of fat that we will remove before cutting the ham itself.
Preserving whole cured meats
If you are one of those people who prefer to buy whole pieces of sausage such as salami, cured pork loin or chorizo, there are also ways in which we can help to keep these pieces in perfect condition.
The best way to preserve Iberian cured meats is to keep them hanging. The piece should be hung with the cut side down. To maintain its texture, cover the part that has already been cut with plastic film and secure it with a string or rubber band so that it is well sealed.
Preserving sliced sausages
The ideal way to preserve sliced cold meats with all their properties is to group all the slices together and stack them on top of each other, wrapping them in transparent film. They should also be spread out inside the envelope in which they were received. Once you have opened one of these sachets, you should consume it within a week.
